Good Times at the Highlands BBQ 2024! The evening weather was perfect for our annual neighborhood BBQ and we had another record turn-out!  Thanks to everyone for coming, bringing side dishes, or helping behind the scenes.  It was a great time to gather, say hello to neighbors, meet new friends, and catch up with old friends. Happy Anniversary to Earl & Carole McCain! This week Earl & Carole celebrated a lot of 6’s and 2’s.  They were married on 6/2 in 1962 and it was their 62nd anniversary! Carole was raised in Idaho, Oklahoma, Oregon, Colorado, and met Earl on a blind date while a student at what is now the University of Northern Colorado (UNC). After their first date, Earl couldn’t remember Carole’s name, but he did remember where she was doing her student teaching and tracked her down.  They married in 1962 and bought their first house in Colorado for $12,000. They had two children (Matt and Amy) while Earl was working on his doctorate in Education at UNC. He eventually interviewed for a job at WSU in 1969 with two professors who happened to live on Gordon Creek Circle in the Highlands (Harley Adamson and Jimmie Merrill). Earl landed the job as a professor of education at Weber and they bought their home here on Wasatch Drive for $25,000. Two more children were born here in Utah (Andrew in 1970 and John in 1972).  Carole says, “I really think we were guided here. We haven’t regretted it one minute. We love the people and we get to see birds and the deer wandering through our yard. I used to hold Austin Larsen in my lap and rock him to sleep and now he has his own children across the street. There’s a lot of history here for us with this wonderful community. The kids had such a great time growing up here, hiking the mountains, climbing trees, camping in the hills, playing with friends, swimming in the swimming holes, and fishing in Gordon Creek.” Carole worked as the Librarian at Morgan elementary for 15 years which was her dream come true and she helped with WSU’s storytelling festival for about 30 years. When Carole first met Earl, she loved how she could talk with him about anything and how interesting he was. Earl served as a professor at Weber for 30 years and was a community leader, especially in scouting. He also helped with the scoreboard for many years for WSU athletics.  Earl would advise the youth to read and learn everything you can – and be grateful you can learn. Earl loved young people and even loved teaching 7th & 8th graders before he became a professor. (That’s pretty remarkable!). We are so grateful for the many years that Earl and Carole have loved those around them here in the Highlands!

Blast from the Past: Guess Who? This is an easy one. Even though this picture was taken 23 years ago, they haven’t changed a bit. (Answer: Dan and Dana Zinz)

Spotlight on Lulu. Mommy Lulu and her five puppies live with the Bradfords at 5674 Woodland Drive. Lulu is a 4 1/2 year old Golden Doodle who came from Jeanette’s sister-in-law’s kennel in Idaho. She is an obedient, low maintenance, loving dog. She loves to play outside and doesn’t care how dirty she gets. She loves to go on hikes with her family. She may run ahead a little, but always runs back to check on everyone. She also loves to run beside the family when they go on bike rides. She’s little, but she can always keep up!  When she’s in the house, Jeanette thinks of her as a grandma dog. She doesn’t demand attention — she just wants to be close and keep an eye on everyone. She is very attentive to her puppies who are, of course, darling!  They’ll be going to their new homes soon. Some will stay local, one will be donated to the School for Blind and Deaf Students in Ogden, and one will be flown with a nanny to a friend in Iowa. Before they go, Jeanette will have taught them how to sit and stay and ring a bell to go outside — a wonderful first step towards house training.
