Happy May to all our Highlands neighbors! Thank you for your hellos, smiles, waves, simple acts of kindness, and goodwill that contribute to the beauty of our community.
Welcome to the Jacob & LeiLoni Bertrand Family! We
are delighted to welcome Jacob and LeiLoni Bertrand, along with their beloved
service dog, Cali, to the neighborhood! They’ll tell you they live in the “Jean
Bigler Home” on Davis Street. LeiLoni grew up in Kansas, graduated from high
school at the top of her class, and earned a degree in recreational therapy
from the University of Utah last week. She plays multiple musical instruments,
directs theatrical productions, and has big plans ahead, including earning a master's
degree in recreational therapy and eventually a doctorate in expressive arts
therapy. Jacob grew up in California, served a mission in the French-speaking
islands of Réunion and Mauritius in the Madagascar mission, and graduated from
BYU last week with a degree in computer engineering. There’s been a lot of graduating,
celebrating, and marching to the tune of “Pomp and Circumstance” in their
family this month!
Jacob and LeiLoni’s love story is as charming as they are. They
met on their very first day at the Disney College Program in January 2024,
became inseparable, moved to Utah, and were married in Bountiful that same
year. Their connection is built on deep conversation, shared ambition, mutual
faith, and a remarkable ability to bring out the best in each other. LeiLoni recently landed an internship with Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation, while
Jacob started an exciting position at HAFB as a systems engineer with the
Sentinel missile program.
They were drawn to Mountain Green by its beauty, its
small-town feel, and a home perfectly suited to their accessibility needs. They
want everyone to know how genuinely touched they have been by the warm welcome
they've received. They can hardly believe how friendly and helpful everyone has
been, and they feel so grateful to have moved into such a wonderful community.
We are lucky to have them!

Farewell to Our Dear Friend Alan Turner.
The Highlands community mourns the passing of Alan David Turner, who left this
life on April 14, 2026, surrounded by his wife and family. He loved his family,
his first wife Linda, who preceded him in death, his second wife Connie, his
children, his grandchildren, and his great-grandchildren. A proud USU graduate,
Alan dedicated 37 years to education. He taught countless students
pre-engineering and architecture at Bonneville High School and at Ogden Weber
Applied Technology College. He loved his career and often said he got to
"play all day." He served his country in the US Army and Air Force
Reserves, retiring as a Major in 1994. A man of deep faith, Alan gave decades
of service, including missions to England, Zimbabwe, and Ogden's inner-city
area. He was a devoted Scouting leader for nearly 50 years, earning the
prestigious Silver Beaver Award, and organized many Mountain Man Rendezvous
events here in Mountain Green. He will be remembered as a man who gave
generously to his family, his community, his country, and his God. Alan was a
wonderful friend and contributor to the Highlands community. We will miss you,
Alan.
Farewell to Our Dear Friend Sharlene Hardy. The
Highlands community extends its deepest sympathies to the family of Sharlene
Lloyd Hardy, who passed away on April 22, 2026. Born in Blackfoot, Idaho, in
1953, Sharlene was raised on a potato and dairy farm with twelve siblings. Farm
life shaped her faith, work ethic, and resilience. She married Roddy Vernon
Hardy in 1974, and together they built a life centered on family and service.
Over a remarkable three-decade nursing career at Logan Regional Hospital and
McKay Dee Hospital, she cared for patients in critical care with both skill and
deep compassion. In a poignant full-circle moment, she passed away in the very
hospital where she had spent so many years serving others. Beyond nursing,
Sharlene was an artist, gardener, quilter, and tireless homemaker. Her annual
tradition of organizing and delivering Christmas gifts to families throughout
the community was just one reflection of a life defined by generous, joyful
service. She and her husband served a mission in Ventura, California, where she
served as the mission nurse. She is survived by her husband, six children, 23
grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and eleven siblings, and will be
remembered by all who knew her as a woman of extraordinary warmth, faith, and
love. Many of her neighbors have received one of her paintings as a gift and an
expression of her love. We will miss you, Sharlene.

Grandma Nana’s Famous Chocolate Chip Cookies. This recipe
for chocolate chip cookies has been a favorite for Jessica Terry’s family. It
comes from her mother. The grandkids (Ty & Benjamin pictured) call her
Grandma Nana. And it’s been tested by the neighborhood boys who tried out this
recipe last week and took cookies to friends in the neighborhood. See video

LeiLoni Bertrand Directs
Musical. LeiLoni wanted everyone to know that she is assistant directing
the Disney musical, “Descendants.” You’ll step into the story of teenage
children of classic Disney villains (like Maleficent's daughter Mal) who are
given a chance to attend the royal prep school alongside the children of
heroes. The central message is that you shouldn't be judged or defined by your
parents' choices or your origins, and that everyone deserves a chance to choose
their own path. At its heart, it's a story about identity and the power of
choosing good even when your upbringing pointed you in a different direction.
The fun part is that the teenagers are played by 45+ actors. Click here for
