October in the Highlands! And that means it’s Trunk-or-Treat time! Ghosts, goblins, and ghouls of all ages are invited to join us on October 31 at 5:30 pm in the Highlands church parking lot. Put on your favorite costume or come as you are—everyone is welcome! If you’d like, please bring a can of food to donate to the Morgan Food Bank.

The Beauty of Mountain Green in Every Season. Welcome to the October 2026 edition of the Highlands Hello, where we welcome new neighbors, spotlight “old” neighbors, share Highlands happenings, recount interesting tidbits of history, share tasty recipes, and celebrate our legacy of neighborhood friendships.

Welcome to our new neighbors, Lincoln & Sally
Erickson! We’re excited to welcome
our new neighbors, Sally & Lincoln Erickson. Sally is the daughter of Craig
& Reva Taylor, who are currently living in Geneva, Switzerland. Sally and
Lincoln are excited to live in Mountain Green and look forward to getting to
know everyone. One interesting thing about Lincoln is that he worked in South Africa
as a mentor for youth who traveled there to serve on humanitarian trips. Lincoln is also an avid hunter and skilled spear fisherman. Sally is an animal whisperer. She loves animals; and they are attracted to her. Both
Sally and Lincoln have warm, enthusiastic personalities and enjoy adventures. Welcome
to the neighborhood!

Welcome to our new neighbor, Caleb Winn! We’re
delighted to welcome Caleb Winn to the Highlands. Caleb moved in with his
Grandma Joan Winn on Davis Street. Caleb was born in St. Louis and graduated
from Morgan High, Ogden-Weber Tech College (electrician), and Weber State (Bachelor's
degree in History). Caleb works for Galeforce Electric, which is owned by the
Gales who grew up here in the Highlands. Fun Fact: Caleb has been a popular substitute
school teacher in all five of our Morgan County public schools. He’s the son of
Rod and Megan Winn, who used to live here in the Highlands. Caleb loves
history, philosophy, and bringing people together – whether by celebrating
holidays or organizing get-togethers. Caleb is excited to be here, appreciates
the area's quiet beauty, and looks forward to getting to know everyone in the
Highlands. Welcome, Caleb!

Welcoming New Life: Baby Calum Adam Ordyna was born
to Connor & Morgan Ordyna. We’re so excited to have Connor, Morgan, and
their new baby Calum here in the Highlands!

Spotlight on Mark & Lori Wheatley! Dear Highlands Neighbors: We have lived on
Box Elder since 1994. We raised two daughters in Morgan County, and they are
successful, bright, and beautiful women. We enjoy being outdoors golfing,
skiing, gardening, and camping. We love living in Mountain Green and the
wonderful neighbors that surround us. We are grateful every day for the
beautiful mountains and the wildlife that visit our home!

Progressive Dinner for Highlands Youth. Youth in the Highlands were treated to a progressive dinner at the Robbin’s (appetizers), Gappmayer’s (dinner), and Marjalee Smith’s (dessert). We appreciate these families investing in the next generation of Highlanders!

Winterizing Your Home & Property. Heating safety: If possible, have an alternate heating source, such as a wood-burning stove, and ensure it's professionally serviced. Place space heaters on a flat, solid surface at least 3 feet away from flammable materials. Never use an outdoor grill to heat your home. Safety equipment: Insulate exposed pipes to prevent freezing and close your sprinkler system shut-off valve. Check and replace the batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Keep a fire extinguisher on hand and know how to use it. Water and food: Stock up on at least a three-day supply of water and non-perishable food, along with a manual can opener. Vehicle maintenance: Get your car winterized, including checking the battery, ignition, brakes, tires, and antifreeze. Keep your gas tank at least half full. Winter car kit: Keep a kit in your car with essentials like a first-aid kit, blankets, extra clothing, a flashlight with extra batteries, jumper cables, a shovel, and high-calorie, non-perishable snacks. Clothing: Have extra warm clothing on hand, including hats, gloves, and waterproof boots for everyone in the household. Practice safety: Dress in layers to stay warm and be cautious of slippery surfaces when walking or driving. Plan how to help elderly family members or neighbors who may need assistance.

Some Hometown History. In 1906, the Deseret News named the Morgan
City Market as the oldest butcher shop in Morgan County. Daniel and George
Heiner operated the store from a two-story building on the corner of 125 North
and Commercial Street. At the same time, H.B. Crouch also ran a business called
H.B. Crouch, Wholesale and Retail Meats. Today, the tradition continues with Bingham's Meats on State Street in Morgan City and at Lee's Market
in Mountain Green.

Recipe of the Month: Halloween Mummy Dogs. Preheat oven to 375°F. Unroll your crescent dough and, using a pizza cutter, cut it into ¼-inch-wide strips lengthwise. Wrap the dough strips around the hot dogs like mummy bandages. They should overlap but still showcase the hot dog inside! Place on a greased baking sheet and bake for about 12 minutes or until the pastry is cooked through and golden brown. Skewer onto wooden skewers and add candy eyes using ketchup or mustard to hold them in place. Enjoy!!!
